“Trusting My Intuition in Business and in Life”

By Pattie Parkhurst

I’m going to be real with you all: The pandemic was tough as a business owner.

Many days I was paralyzed by the thought of moving forward. The ups and downs of not knowing were bipolar. Uncertainty was all around me and I was holding onto every possible opportunity; just trying different approaches in my jewelry making to keep afloat. For someone who loves to work and be busy, stagnation can be debilitating.

So, when I decided to share my thoughts on RedLily’s storytelling platform for women—I reflected for a while about how I could make a small difference in someone else’s life who may also be struggling. I am not perfect, and I don’t have all the answers, but I do know that through my experience I have been able to find my true self. I have discovered what makes me happy.

I also learned to trust my intuition. Sometimes our inner voice screams, LISTEN TO ME!!! That part inside us knows what is right for your soul. So, listen.

Listening to our intuition is truly simple.

Nature makes most humans happy as in going for a walk and noticing our surroundings. I look at my bodies of work and literally I can see the reflection of nature in flowing, effortless, cohesive designs. It usually starts outdoors and the continuation of what I experience follows me inside to create in the manner nature intends for all of us.

Last week I questioned what makes me, me.

And, more importantly, what truly makes us happy? For me, it’s that Zen state where time doesn’t exist, pausing to eat is an annoyance and you are totally immersed in your craft or sport or spreadsheet. In my opinion, happiness is also…

Whatever gets your flow going.

Whatever feels good.

Whatever (or whoever) is always there waiting for you.

Doing what we are supposed to do and loving it.

When everything runs effortlessly and easily.

When the planets align.

And so on.

Recently I finished these earrings and reflected on the day, totally content. The technique I use is time-intensive, hammering and forging for hours over an antler-like shape.

When I’m in my groove, time isn’t there and the forms and shapes come out of me like a waterfall.

How was it that easy, sheesh?
